The Parts of Commercial Freezers

Here is a run-down of the various parts of a freezer and what you should look for in each of them:

  • Exterior. The freezer encasement or box should be made of a durable, easy-to-clean material that provides excellent insulation while resisting dents and scratches.
  • Door. As with a commercial refrigerator, the most important consideration for your freezer door is to make sure it latches securely and seals tightly.
  • Floor. Make sure that your freezer floor can hold the amount of weight you plan to put on it. A good minimum guideline is 600 pounds per square foot.
  • Refrigeration system. The best refrigeration designs will maintain the indicated temperature at low pressure and has emergency safeguards in place to prevent system shutdowns.
  • Temperature controls. Look for units that allow precision control and an intuitive interface. All staff members will need to be able to readjust the temperature in the event of a discrepancy, so ease of use is an extremely important feature as well.
  • Temperature regulators. Compressors, condensers and evaporators all affect the flow of refrigerant and freezing compounds. Ensure you get warranty protection over these components.

The most common type of commercial freezer is the upright freezer, which is a great space-saver if you have limited square footage. However, horizontal chest freezers make superior use of their storage space, as virtually every cubic inch of volume is usable for storage. Walk-in freezers are a must if you have to store a large volume of frozen foods, and they are a mainstay of institutional environments and larger restaurants.
